Re: Explain to me again why this band is so popular? (non Dead, extremely Phishy) |
What current or recent bands do you prefer? bands that play NOW and preferably still write new songs. They aren't my favorite band by any stretch and I rarely listen to them but I've seen them a few times and I can't for the life of me see how anybody who isn't close minded ( not saying you said this ) could say they suck. that's ridiculous. They are talented, technically sophisticated, and they play for MANY hours, often longer than anything Mickey Hart tries to convince people or himself the Dead played ( seven hours my ass but Phish has ). So put just these few factors together and I don't get why people think they suck. Stupid spaced out fans? Is that why people say they suck? Or is it some weird jealousy that they got unfairly compared to the Dead only because they played similar improv type shows for multiple nights and no repeats? Or because they were known for stoner fans? Not enjoying listening to them and saying they suck are not the same argument to me.

Re: Explain to me again why this band is so popular? (non Dead, extremely Phishy) |
I've always been torn and it wasn't until an hour ago (after listening to a couple of shows last night and two today,)that I realized the source of my tornness. The music is not bad, in fact, it's nice background when you are focused on some work, etc.
BUT, the lyrics are infantile and forced-weirdness. It was "Contact" that shown the light. I quote,
"The wheels are the part of the car that make contact with the ground." For nine-freakin minutes! And it has a very lullaby sound. And at one point the audience is mimicking Phish who have raised their arms and are swaying back and forth. And, I thought, this is not a connection, this is Phish being manipulative and seeing what kind of stupid things they can get their trained phans to do.
The whole Phish scene reeks of planned-spontaneity and staged-wackiness---"Look at us, we're craaaaaazier than Deadheads."
That said, I just got thru the stupid opening verses of Tweezer and am enjoying a nice 15 minute groove.
Go figure,

Re: Explain to me again why this band is so popular? (non Dead, extremely Phishy) |
Come on people!!!! Phish may not be your thing, but they don't "suck". I mean if you cherry pick the songs, any band sucks. Imagine if your first impression of the Grateful Dead was Pigpen singing Hey Jude!
I think you get my point
Admit it, being a picky Deadhead can skew your view of the world of music. Being a fan of both bands(GD and Phish), I never saw the thread that everyone tries to use to connect them, aside from the long jams. I am also a fan of Frank Zappa and I don't think he sounds anything like the Dead either. And using FZ as the measure of a musical mind makes most bands look infantile. But then again Frank doesn't have the soul Jerry does. The world of music is a big place, we shouldn't try to make it smaller, otherwise ticket prices will go up again!

"Gnome sayin?"
I gnome you're sayin'. These threads are getting old. I understand how people can not love Phish, but it's incredibly ignorant to just say, "they suck." Even Jerry Gnome gnomes what you're sayin'.

Re: Explain to me again why this band is so popular? (non Dead, extremely Phishy) |
I asked something similar, and got some good links, actually:
http://archive.org/post/421662/the-trey-challenge-part-iiSome are terrific, some not so much (to my ears). I like Back on the Train a lot. Their bass player is obviously incredibly influenced by Phil, and really super; for whatever reason, he grabs me more than Trey, although I have no doubt that Trey is a virtuoso.
After listening to some more (and even getting a whole album, Phish Alpine Valley 2010), I think I do kind of get the attraction for Phish phans ... or at least, here's my best guess.
Some of the music is going to appeal to anyone with "GD Ears," so there's definitely that crossover in "listener types," and that part's easy enough to "get."
The different part is that it also seems to be super-super-light, with the celebratory aspect keyed more to bouncy and playful than what the Dead offers. They're most definitely lacking anything approaching a Robert Hunter or a Jerry, so IMO they're distinctly low on the soul-o-meter. I think that's what annoys Dead fans the most: Phish fans think they're just so amazing, and if you're used to Jerry and Hunter, you can go, "Huh?" But I guess that's not the point.
Also if you listen to a whole show, it seems like there's a
a kind of experiential aspect that I'm sure is really important -- in that sense, it's like the Dead, but it seems to be a very different feeling and experience, more about play and having a smiley, almost child-like Surround Sound Dance Party than depth and exploration. But maybe Phish phans have all kind of great insights listening to The Sloth or something and you just Hadda Be There.
Certainly the music can be good. As for the passionate aspect, which is really the question -- not "why do some people think it's got musical appeal," but "why do some people think it's ABSOLUTELY AMAZING and LET'S FOLLOW THEM EVERYWHERE" -- to me it's got to be even more connected with the show experience than the Dead. You do definitely find Deadheads who never went to shows; I'm betting you won't really find that for Phish in the future. People who can appreciate the musicality, sure; but not the level of passion, cuz there's just not as much "there" there. IMO, of course.

The Phish-bashing threads make me wonder..does the GD get based a lot on Phish forums?

Re: Explain to me again why this band is so popular? (non Dead, extremely Phishy) |
I occasionally read a Widespread Panic forum that a friend recommended. There was a thread recently titled. "Who DOESN'T like the Grateful Dead?" Most were in favor, but a surprising amount admitted to not liking the boys. Of course, WSP has an entirely different sound.
My buddy, a big fan, cannot understand why I haven't gotten on their bus so to speak. Lord knows I've tried - they're basically local for me, but I just isn't working out between us...
Here's an enjoyable Phish tune:

cilb -
I had no idea what you were talking about....then I went back and saw the typo in your OP. Believe me, I did not see it, I read right through "based" v. "bashed" - and as such, my comment was not directed at you.
But now that you pointed your error out.......
Drop and give Rob 20 push-ups.

Do The Grateful Dead get bashed? Certainly not!
But Bobby probably does.
Reminds of a joke someone once told me:
What did the one Phishhead say to the other Phishhead when the acid wore off?
"Dude....this music sucks!"

Important Phish Announcement from Royal Stoner magazine. |
Important Phish Announcement from Royal Stoner magazine.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YOQJxRCCpw8New song “Pogo Sticks” see/hear if you can spot the 1973-1974 "Eyes" jam riff.
By Benji Eyesn
June 04, 2012 11:05 AM ET
The band Phish announced today the release of a new album "Phish Phood" featuring new band members in what is considered to be some of their finest work to date.
Phish is an American rock band noted for its musical improvisation, extended jams, exploration of music across genres, and an adoring fan base. "Due to the excessive cost of touring we (phish) feel that the new band members will provide an interesting interpretation of our improvisational musical personation at a considerably lower cost."
Inspired by the emerging virtual web net-broadcast streams, Phish management feels this is the best way to efficiently and effectively communicate to our dedicated fan base.
In an experiment known as "The Rotation Jam", each member switches instruments with the musician on his left. On occasion a performance of "You Enjoy Myself" involved Gordon and Anastasio performing synchronized maneuvers on mini-trampolines while playing their instruments. Pogo Sticks is simply an evolution of this live stage theatrical performance.
Their new hit single "Pogo Sticks" has topped every jam band chart across America.

Mea culpa.
I honestly didn't remember posting something similar before.
Recently I have had several people (again) trying to turn me on to Phish, telling me how great such & such show was, etc., so it was just again on my mind.

I would be hard pressed to explain it, and I can’t listen to them for as long or often as I do with the Dead, but I really enjoy the high quality videos available for viewing. Thanks
